Gerard Baker provides a side-by-side comparison of Obama’s and Palin’s experience

We can always count on Gerard Baker (U.S. Editor of the Times UK) to bring some clarity (and humor) to the muddle of American Politics and he does so today in his article in Real Clear Politics. Here’s an excerpt–read it all at RCP

Obama: A very attractive speaker whose celebrity has been compared to that of Britney Spears and who sends thrills up Chris Matthews’ leg

Palin: A very attractive woman, much better-looking than Britney Spears who speaks rather well too. She sends thrills up the leg of Rush Limbaugh (and me).

Executive experience

Obama: Makes executive decisions every day that affect the lives of his campaign staff and a vast crowd of traveling journalists

Palin: Makes executive decisions every day that affect the lives of 500,000 people in her state, and that impact crucial issues of national economic interest such as the supply and cost of energy to the United States.

Ex-Astronaut: Aliens Are Real and Government Knows It (Fox News)

DISCLAIMER: We will take no position pro or con on the reality of alien contact unless and until they get involved in Presidential politics. 😉

Not sure which is the bigger story here–that Edgar Mitchell has (again) told his story of alien contact or that it was headlined on Fox News.

As some of you may remember, Mitchell (who for all intents and purposes seems quite believable) told this story as far back as 1994 (and maybe earlier).

But, FWIW, here it is (again)…

Former NASA astronaut and moon-walker Dr. Edgar Mitchell — a veteran of the Apollo 14 mission — claims aliens exist.

He says extraterrestrials have visited Earth on several occasions — but the alien contact has been repeatedly covered up by governments for six decades.

Mitchell, 77, said during a radio interview in Birmingham, England, that sources in the federal government who had had contact with aliens described the beings as “little people who look strange to us.”

He said supposedly real-life ET’s were similar to the traditional image of a “small gray” — short, slight frame, large eyes and large head.

Here’s the LINK to audio clip at Kerrang Radio in Birmingham UK that aired the interview. The show is “The Night Before” (the Tuesday show). BTW, this clip seems to work only on Internet Explorer.

You must click on “Karrang Radio” in the left hand menu and then click on “The Night Before” (Tuesday show) to hear the clip.

From Press Release 7/15/2008…

Is the Army adopting a Crossfit-style PT program?

UPDATE 8/13/2008 4:30 PM:
I posted a great Crossfit Video link today…click here to check it out.

Original Post:

The Army is adopting a new PT program that sounds like a modified “Crossfit.” As fans of Crossfit know, the Navy Seals have already discarded their old program in favor of Crossfit (in fact, they have their own WOD and Seals Crossfit site)…

Here’s the article at Strategy Page

Realistic PT For Combat

The U.S. Army is changing its physical training (PT) to more closely reflect the needs of combat. Instead of long distance running, sit-ups and push-ups, the new training emphasizes sprinting, agility and the kind of strength needed to carry weapons and equipment in combat. The new training also uses a twelve month physical training cycle that peaks when troops are deploying to a combat zone, or, in peacetime, doing a year or more of “ready for deployment” status.

The more advanced stages of the new physical training has troops doing the drills in full combat equipment. That won’t be a problem, because the exercises they will be doing are the same kinds of moves they will make in combat.

Starbucks to close 600 underperforming coffee shops (12,000 jobs cut)

The markets in Europe reacted favorably to Starbucks decision to trim off its underperforming U.S. coffee shops while expanding its operations in Europe (it plans to open 150 new locations in Germany, Britain, and France in the next 3 years).

BTW, Starbucks has doubled in size since 2004 so this would seem an opportune time to prune operations.

Per the Times UK…

US consumers are giving up their luxury coffees as they tighten their belts in the face of rising food and fuel bills. Increasing competition from the likes of McDonald’s, which has started selling premium-priced coffees, has also hurt Starbucks.

Starbucks will close the company-operated stores across the US by the end of March 2009. Most of the coffee shops destined for closure have been open for less than two years and were not profitable nor likely to make an acceptable return in the near future.
